2019 1500 : Concerning Cabin Sounds

Howdy all :

So I've had my '19 1500 BigHorn for a few weeks now, and have recently noticed something odd and interesting. (I came from a '17 Silverado CrewCab LTZ Z71) I had put a 2 wheeled cart in the back of the crew cab which triggered some crazy pulsing / humming sounds. It sounds like the world's most boring Lighstaber duel. https://youtu.be/ouDizv64nbI

Then, fast forward to yesterday, and I loaded up a couple friends in the back seat for a little road trip, and the sounds came back, albeit much less pronounced than what's in the video.

It feels like some sort of weirdness with whatever noise cancelling system the vehicle has. Only happens when something or someone substantial is in the back (dogs don't trigger it). I'm going to be bringing it to my dealer this week to investigate. Anyways : Has anyone else experienced this?

Does it happen when radio is on softly?

I think you're right about it being something in the noise cancelling system. Strange that payload changes would cause it which makes me wonder if it is something with resonate frequency changes to the frame/chassis.

It happens regardless of the radio being on or off. What's interesting is that 2 handed cart that caused the sounds in the video is pretty light. maybe 10lbs? But, it's a long metal object that like you mentioned, might effect some resonance or whatever. That said : 80 lbs of dogs back there doesn't change it, but 500 lbs of human back there does

Curious if you have the premium sound system? Can you tell us your VIN?

I'm sorry I was a bit distracted and missed your reply. I have the factory sound system on a standard Big Horn Ram. VIN : 1C6SRFFT0KN513183 . This sound happens regardless of the sound system being on, off, muted, low volume, or high volume. It REALLY feels like bad or poorly programmed noise cancelling system for the cab.

Well, the Ram is at the dealership for a Shifter issue, but they told me they found that bulletin and addressed that already. So : once I have a working truck again hopefully it won't happen anymore.

I plan on putting on a Carven Competitor exhaust system when they come out with the design for the '19's. I emailed them, and they are still in design phase for 19's. My concern is how will this noise cancelling system work with it? I want to hear the exhaust sound lol.

Finally got my truck back after 18 days for a shifter issue, but turns out the sound issue was NOT addressed. Service department said hood vibration was also part of the solution and Ram doesn't have whatever's necessary to send to the dealership to solve it. So : I get to bring my truck back and have them fix it at some point in the future, i guess, hopefully.

Pretty much all I can ask of RamCares is to tell the bean-counters at Ram that keeping parts out of the hands of dealers is making me not feel too terribly important to them as a customer. Definitely going to take another look at the new generation Silverados once my lease is up.

Lol tons of comments like this in EVERY brand’s enthusiasts forums. If you think customer service, vehicle issues or parts availability will be any better with Chevy..or any other brand..you’re severely mistaken. These ain’t your parents vehicles or car companies. Be patient and stay on top of it. Good luck.

This is true. But my purely anecdotal experience : of the dozen or so 4 wheel vehicles I've owned, the Ram is up to 2nd place for amount of issues I've had.. and at only 3k miles. (Nobody will take the crown from my 1990 Nissan Stanza holy moly what a pile that car was).

Amen to that. Ford recalled EVERY 2015-2017 F150 over inoperative door latches. Parts on backorder 6+ months, guys put in rental F150s...that had the same issue as the truck you took into the service department! With JIT inventories it's the new normal.

niiiiiiiice. I'd probably be slightly less cranky overall if I was more insistent (i'm a pushover) to get a truck to drive for the last 18 days rather than a durango. The durango is decent for what it is (wife loved it and wants one instead of her sorento)... but I need to haul some **** every once in a while at least give me something with a trailer hitch!

Also, it doesn’t help RAMs Case that this is a first year model of a completely new truck. I hope they get you taken care of soon. Keep us informed.

I am having a very similar issue with my new 2019 1500. It has that reverberation similar to the lightsaber sound and it seems loudest in the rear behind the driver's seat. It will come and go and my dealer has not a clue, but they have heard it and have it now. I had originally thought that something was touching the exhaust or transmission. The reverberation is strongest at about 1500 rpm's and it will stop as quickly as it starts. Extra people in the back seat seem to cause it to start. I have been reporting this since I got the truck in August but I finally got the noise to replicate at the dealer this last Saturday. This is extremely frustrating and exceedingly annoying. When it happens, it vibrates the floor of the cab and rear door panels.

I brought my truck to my local dealer for the same sounds yesterday. Tech drive along to verify the problem. I told service it must be the atmm (active tune mass modules mounted to the frame ) and with the active noise cancellation system. They started a star case and had my problem solved a few hours later. They reset the noise systems and put them in a re-learn procedure? Not 100% sure but can find out exactly if it helps. So far so good, no more Star Wars battles in my truck.
