An Engineer's Ultimate Guide To 3.21 VS 3.92 Axle Ratio

Thanks to the ZF transmission with 4 more gears than we needed, we can get away with either over or under gearing in the axles.

Could be fun. Push all the rubble into the hole and pave over it? :D

    Need a 3500 dualie with 4.56's at least. :D

An Engineer's Ultimate Guide To 3.21 VS 3.92 Axle Ratio

Yes. I didn't mention it since this is an axle ratio thread (which spun off the road into tire size, mileage, and other stuff). MDS adds another dimension, fewer cylinders working harder to make the same power.

That is pretty poor. The Laramie is a bit heavier, but I'd still have expected 16 or better. Almost makes me wonder if something is wrong with it. Mouse nest in the air box, potato in the exhaust? And ... ummm ... not to underestimate the human factor, console shifter and pleasant exhaust...

An Engineer's Ultimate Guide To 3.21 VS 3.92 Axle Ratio

Not the whole key, but a significant factor. Your car probably has much better aerodynamics, so apples and oranges. 🤷‍♂️ But comparing different drive ratios (which includes tire size) for otherwise equal vehicles, I would expect lower RPM to be more efficient. I don't have a fuel consumption...

An Engineer's Ultimate Guide To 3.21 VS 3.92 Axle Ratio

That's at 55, a speed that all three gears are pretty happy with. And yeah based on the lie-o-meter in the dashboard, which really isn't all that bad, and it's relative anyway. Yeah friction is probably linear, but aero drag may be geometric. 45 is about max for mileage, much slower insists...

An Engineer's Ultimate Guide To 3.21 VS 3.92 Axle Ratio

Tow haul is discussed extensively in other threads, mostly raises shift points and adds engine braking, equally useful/useless with any final drive ratio IMO.

An Engineer's Ultimate Guide To 3.21 VS 3.92 Axle Ratio

True, but so what? You didn't quite answer your own question so ... 1) Pumping loss. Your engine is actually using some power to create a vacuum in the intake. Heavy throttle opening at low RPM is relatively more efficient than light throttle at high RPM. 2) Friction. At least to a first...

Funny Memes and Funny Pictures 2.0 - NO POLITICS Find the other thread

I can see how that might actually make sense. The little car fits up in the back of one of the big toy hauler buses, which also tows the boat down the highway normally. They break out this rig to maneuver the boat around the campgrounds. Or just the car to buzz around locally. Looks crazy...

An Engineer's Ultimate Guide To 3.21 VS 3.92 Axle Ratio

Nah, leave the generator running in your driveway and use long extension cord. Hurts efficiency too much to tow generator around all the time, only tow it to the truck stop when it needs refueled.

An Engineer's Ultimate Guide To 3.21 VS 3.92 Axle Ratio

Actually, I think most of them do have gear reduction. Direct drive is possible, but it's hard to get the electro-magnetics down to practical size at low speed. That thing out of Lordstown actually had wheel motors, I guess, but that's a lot of unsprung weight. With high frequency electronic...

Cybertruck has a nice big bed for your extension cord. Just play it out as you go and no worry about running out of charge. :p

Electric motors not crippled by connecting rods and valve train, they are probably running more like 6.13's. 🔥

    Remote Mount Oil Filter

We used to have some dirt roads, and the county oiled the roads periodically to keep dust down anyway. Just had to make sure no one was coming for a few minutes.

    What would you prefer?

It sounds like this might be heading toward a Hemi vs. Hurricane thread, so I'll lean in a bit. You could in theory have both of those things on a Hemi by adding turbo(s). Same engine running at lower speed under boost could produce the same power but better MPG. Or crank up the RPM and you...

    Remote Mount Oil Filter

That sounds worthy of adding to the list of filter relocation virtues. (y) You can actually do that if the filter hangs vertically, but not so much if it's angled on side of the engine.
