If it hits 290F you might want to back off, but 260F is not particularly worrisome. For something like a century, engines didn't even have all these gauges to make us worry, and modern synthetic oils will take quite a beating.

Hate to see it, but yeah sounds likely. This function used to be accomplished with steel tube soldered into brass radiator tank, and you never had trouble with it. But modern assembly methods combined with thinner and lighter materials have sometimes led to consequences.
