My wife and I will be taking a 6 week driving vacation from Washington State to Maine to South Carolina back to Washington.

We are visiting many bucket list places along the way. Will avoid most big cities except D.C.

We won't be towing anything.

We will be driving my 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie w/air ride & 5.7 Hemi. Leaving in mid- September. Truck will have about 50,000 miles at departure.

Besides making sure I am up to date on maintenance and don't need any oil changes or tires along the way.... Is there anything else you can suggest that might help us prepare?

I will be toting my Glock. Will have a cooler, plenty of drinking water, snacks, emergency kit, clothes, etc.

I have done my share of long distance traveling but this will be our longest trip.
Likely about 8,000-10,000 miles.

Thanks

The only thing I can suggest is the air filters , both engine and cabin . Other than that it sounds like you have everything else being done .

Might wanna check the laws of every state you’ll be passing through regarding your Glock. For example in NC, without a concealed permit recognized by the state, the gun needs to be either visible (not under a seat/in glovebox/center console) or somewhere inaccessible to the people in the passenger compartment (not technically possible in a truck IMO) open carry is legal without a permit in NC. In SC if you are legal to own the gun, you can have it in the glovebox or center console without worrying about permits, but cannot open carry at all (excepting a few activities I’m assuming you won’t be partaking in) unless you are LEO, then your badge must be displayed on the same side of your belt as gun.
You aren’t likely to be bothered about it in either of those states, just giving examples I am familiar with.

if you are staying in the limits of DC, I don’t know that a pistol would be legal at all, might be best to stay in Northern Va and leave the pistol in the room when you tour DC.

If you aren’t stopping for a particular attraction in Illinois, you may want to bypass it entirely, if that isn’t an option I’d fuel up, eat and take a bathroom break before I crossed the border into Ill and make it my goal not to stop my/exit my vehicle until I was across the other border lol.

Concur with reading up on the laws of each state. Also know how to "legally" transport firearms through unfriendly states.

According to your state, WA state licenses are not recognized by many states. https://www.atg.wa.gov/concealed-pistol-license-reciprocity Note that their list does not show constitutional carry states-the three northern New Enlgand states have constitutional carry.

Thanks for the info on the gun.

My understanding is I can buy a 33 State permit, and maybe more. I'm sure they'll be States I will have to secure it somewhere.

It's sort of that simple and sort of not. There are a few companies out there that offer a streamlined application process to satisfy several state's non resident permission slip requirements. Utah and Florida are popular. You'll have to go to each state your passing through website to ensure you are legal to carry through there. Some states also don't recognize non resident permission slips for reciprocity purposes. Most states won't scuff you up much, but rest assured that ****hole states like MA, NY, and NJ will make you front page news of some cop brag post taking the criminal off the streets. DC too.

I recommend searching each state on your path for reciprocity-simple google search and go to the official state page. Another helpful page which does not replace the official state pages: https://www.handgunlaw.us/ Then look up FOPA to see your left and right limits while transiting anti-American states.

I'm definitely not trying to discourage you from carrying. I encourage it always. I just don't want to see you run afoul of some ****hole state's weird laws. I also realize and appreciate that big boy rules and the judged by 12 vs carried by six argument applies-that is a wholly personal decision that should be done from an educated standpoint.

but--back on the subject of places-assuming a loop and sticking around major highways:

Passing through KC hit up the WWI museum. Really well done museum that takes about six hours to get through. Great food nearby too-https://emchamas.com/. https://www.theworldwar.org/
Fayetteville, NC hit the Airborne and Special Ops museum. https://www.asomf.org/ Huske Harware down the street has decent food. If you can get on post(no pistol), the 82nd Airborne Division is good: https://www.82ndairbornedivisionmuseum.com/. About an hour and a half east is the USS North Carolina. https://www.battleshipnc.com/
Anniston, AL hit the CMP's South Store(if they are open). Buy a Garand. Get your documents in order before the trip. https://thecmp.org/cmp_sales/cmp-stores/
New Orleans, LA the D Day museum-which has changed to become the WWII museum. https://www.nationalww2museum.org/
Drive Mount Washington in NH: https://mt-washington.com/
Drive Pike's Peak in CO: https://www.pikes-peak.com/attractions/pikes-peak-americas-mountain/
Hike up Guadalupe Mountain. Nice easy day hike with good views. https://www.nps.gov/gumo/planyourvisit/hiking.htm

There is a ton of history in Boston, but it is a no go with a pistol.

Try Wrightsville beach just south north of Myrtle beach. White sand topical blue water, and has a more relaxing vibe. 🙂
Both of these are about an hour maybe an hour and a half North of Myrtle Beach and would make a good combined “day trip” assuming you’ve already secured accommodations in the Myrtle Beach area. Assuming the length of your stay is enough for that.

Again if you’re here long enough for a few day trips out of the immediate Myrtle/North Myrtle area, I’d suggest heading to the Charleston area (2ish hours south) and seeing the Angel oak, along with a visit to patriot point (home of the USS Yorktown air craft carrier)

How long are you staying in the Myrtle beach area? And will y’all be eating out? Cooking in the room?

A few things I can think of right now off the top of my head. Bring a hand towel or dish towel or bandana and keep it handy. It's more common that public restrooms have those useless air dryers than paper towels. It's so nice to wash hands, and dry them on the way out. When the wife and I travel, the back seat is flipped up so we drape the damp cloths over the seat to dry. Also, save an empty water bottle or something and fill it with laundry soap. Most laundromats are reasonable for the wash and dry but they gouge you on soap. It also doesn't hurt to buy a roll of quarters before you leave. I like to have paper maps to get the bigger picture. I may program the GPS, but often there are more scenic, less-crowded parallel routes that it ignores to shave 3 minutes or half a mile.

If you are travelling I-90 I'd recommend Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, and a stop at Niagara Falls in NY. Depending on when the trip is, bring your passports in case the Canadian border is open by then (better to see the falls from there IMHO). There are also lots of great places off I-90 in the Finger Lakes region of NY...Skaneateles Falls, Canandaigua, etc.

At the beach in SC check out Hot Fish Club...fantastic restaurant.

The beaches south of Myrtle do tend to be more relaxed.

If it were me, I'd stop in Nashville, TN. We just did a week vacation there and it is fantastic.
