Just bought a Chinese SKS Type 56 Military Surplus 7.62x39 simply for the fact I love history stuff! Lol was shopping for a new truck pistol and came across them.

Completely broke it down today and cleaned all the cosmoline off of it and reassembled. Ordered a period correct sling for it and intend to find the cleaning kit for it as well and some strippers clips.

It is a numbers matching gun, quite a few dings and dents. I look forward to shooting it.

Anyone knowledgeable in this department? I don’t mind its character, however am considering cleaning it up a bit? Strip it, light sand to blend the dents a bit, and linseed oil? Worth it and what would be the correct process and tools? Will doing this devalue it down the road if it every becomes a collectors item?

The most knowledge I have of them is that I was shot at multiple times by them and some AK's in '67-'68. SKS's are some tough, dependable guns and it looks like you've got a milled one instead of stamped so it's a good quality weapon. If you want to clean up the stock I'd go ahead. There are a lot of SKS around so I don't think they will be collectors items anytime soon so make it look as good as you can.

I have a stamped SKS and the shorter paratrooper model hear and I removed that box magazine and put the adapter plate in that lets you use a 30 rd. magazine. They are part of my apocalypse bug out bag along with 2000 rds of 7.62 x 39.

Just another crazy old Vietnam vet that believes, from experience, that things can go to crap faster than you think. If you don't believe me just ask the Seattle police department.

Definitely believe that Jerry. Question for you guys, I'm a pistol, hunting rifle and shotgun guy but recent events have me thinking of something along the lines of an AR or similar. What are some recommendations for around a grand? Make, caliber, Optics, etc

FYI Not the first time a police precinct was lost to civilians. Fort Surrender, 66 pct, Brooklyn NY

Andrew Cuomo has Columbus Circle in NYC protected around the clock with Police from the "protesters". Want to see how things go to crap come to NYC. Mayor dumblasio was elected by 17% of voters on his first term. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (AOC, aka All Out Crzay) received 9,000 votes out of 210,000 eligible voters in the June democratic primary for congress, which she won and pretty much guarantees her election because she is a democrat. For the most part 9,000 people put her in office.

I wouldnt spend too much time fixing the imperfections. Thats a good, reliable, ****s hitting the fan type rifle. Just make sure the internals are in good shape and let her eat.

I'm not big on optics. I figure that anything the might really happen is a <100 meter fight and properly zeroed iron sights do just fine. Optics just make it heavier, take up more space, and easier to damage. As for the weapon there are lots of good ones and expensive ones but, besides my SKS's, my main is a .223/5.56 AR-15 with the sliding stock. If I had it to do over I might buy the same weapon but in the .308 caliber just for the stopping power.

Smith and Wesson M&P Sport 2 and the Ruger SR 556 are considered great entry level AR-15s. I have the S&W myself and like it a good bit.

Im a firm believer in PSA. You get good quality milspec parts, and good fit and finish. The parts are cheaper than other companies. Ive built over a dozen rifles with parts from PSA for friends, never had a single issue other than user error. As far as optics, im very heavily biased to vortex. Their VIP "you break it we replace it, no questions asked" is anazing, and i've never heard a complaint about their customer service.

M&P Sport is a good sub $600 AR to get started with, if you want to spend a little bit more the Springfield Saint is a really good AR that can be had for ~1200. If you want an optic you can get something like the SIG Romeo or a Holosun red dot for ~150. PSA typically has deals where you can get a red dot and a bunch of PMAG's for the price of the red dot. If you have any good LGS in your area you can also build an AR for less than $1k.
