103 miles on my ram.... won't **** from park to drive.

Hi all,

I've been wanting to buy a new ram for MANY years. I found out about the redesigned body style a few years ago and decided to hold out. I finally just purchased a bighorn last week and It today just broke 100 miles. However, in the maybe 5 or 6 times I've driven in in the last week twice now the truck has been stuck in place. I put the truck into gear from park to drive and it just sits there at idle. If you depress the gas a little bit the truck eventually slams itself into drive and sends you flying forward.

It seems this is a common problem based upon the feedback from this forum, I've taken the vehicle to the dealership and they basically told me that I don't know how to use the rotary shifter and that they weren't able to recreate the issue. I'm hoping to find a little advice on what I might be able to do to get this rectified. I'm a long time FCA owner and now this is the second time I've had issues with a brand new vehicle in the last 12 months.

What is your vehicle description?

There are a couple of things that could be happening. Before you switch from park to drive, check the following.

Is your seatbelt on and fastened
Are your doors closed

If either of those are not correct, the truck will leave on the parking brake

There’s an entire thread about this and steps that have been taken to fix it, everything from a software update to replacing the transmission. I personally had the issue about 7 times in 4 days. Had the software update applied and it hasn’t happened since.

Chrysler products have an I interface lock usually on the right side of the shifter take off the chrome trim and check YouTube the replacement lockout is metal not plastic

I had the same problem with my 2018 Ram 2500 Laramie. After 45 days at Reedman-Toll FCA decided to take the truck back. Lemon law. Im waiting on a new truck.

I haven’t seen or heard about this on DT body Rams yet, but we have had a few DS trucks with the same issue. The customers started noticing this would happen after the U05/U07 AutoPark Recall was done.

I finally figured out how to consistently duplicate the problem. And by consistently I mean EVERY time I shifted from park to drive. The timing of everything has to be just right though, and pretty fast.

Start the vehicle. Press the brake pedal JUST enough to allow the shift knob interlock to release so you can shift to drive. Take your foot off the brake pedal at the same time you are shifting to drive. You will be able to move the shifter because the Electronic Shifter Module has not had enough time to engage the interlock back once it stops seeing the brake switch pressed. Now with it in drive, it should not move. This is normal, because now the Transmission Control Module is seeing a gear request from the ESM but does not see the brake pedal depressed. It will default to neutral, even though the shifter says D. This will not set a fault code in any module.

Try it and see if that creates the same symptoms you are having.

I have the same issue. I have found that if you switch it to reverse and let the transmission actually set in reverse you can then put it in drive and your all set. I hope this helps. This usually occurs to me when I am parked on a forward slant. But the reverse trick has worked for me.

Make sure all your doors are shut. If a door is open slightly it will stay in park.

I've had the same problem several times it usually happens when I go from forward to reverse and back, when this happens the emergency brakes come on. I put the truck in park turn the vehicle off and then restart it, usually works, I have to take it in for a recall for an airbag problem see if they fix the shifter.

A quick update for those wondering, this happened to me again out of town. I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow so I went to drop my dog off at the dog resort and I was stuck in park and couldn't leave. I couldn't do anything to get the truck to catch in drive. I called the dealership from the parking lot and he told me that I need to be slower about turning the dial from Park to Drive. So I put it in park and went to each gear in like 2 second increments and finally the vehicle went into Drive.


This whole thing is putting a seriously bad taste in my mouth, my wife doesn't even feel comfortable driving this truck because she's worried she will have to fiddle **** with the dial to get the thing to properly engage in drive and I honestly cannot blame her.

As stated, it might just be the interlock latch. 17 bucks on eBay.

Or try to have the dealer replace that part, you shouldn’t have to do it on a new truck but for 17 bucks it might be worth it.

We have owned a half dozen or so of these Chrysler rotary knobs, never had an issue but I’ve seen this many times. Makes me wonder if I’m just lucky or if there’s some sort of “operator error” happening (from Chrysler’s view point anyway) that’s triggering this.

I definitely noticed this on my 2014 Ram. If you are in a rush and go through the movements as described by Grayman5752 very quickly it would stay in "limbo" and show D on the shifter, but still be in neutral. On mine it would also prompt something on the dash cluster, like Vehicle not in park or something like that. It only happened a few times and I got used to making sure I was holding the brake down until it actually shifted into drive before letting go of the brake pedal it was not an issue.

I have not seen it in my 2019 Ram, but I also dont rush the gear shifting process anymore as a habit so its hard to say for sure.

My 2019 Ram 1500 Limited has about 1000 miles on it; and this exact problem has happened to my wife. It eventually slammed into gear with a loud noise and a sudden jerk forward. Certainly doesn't seem right; and will be a safety issue going forward. I'm disappointed to hear that this is a relatively common problem (and relieved at the same time in hopes that this is something FCA will fix with a recall). In the meantime, I will try to use the mitigation techniques mentioned in this thread.

After I took my 15 Ram in for some update it changed things to where I had to have my doors shut before I could take it out of Park. Curious if this is similar. Not saying your doors aren't closed, but maybe tied to same mechanisms.
