A few weeks ago, you might have seen on our sister site MoparInsiders.com, that several readers spotted a convoy of pre-production 2022 Jeep® Wagoneer (WS) test vehicles traveling across the American midwest. It was our first time to see the all-new full-size Ram 1500-based SUV out testing with minimal camouflage, only a few days after the Jeep brand pulled the covers of the Grand Wagoneer Concept in Detroit. Now, we are getting to see even more details of the next vehicle to carry the iconic nameplate testing near the company’s Auburn Hills, Michigan headquarters.
According to our sources, about 90% of the Grand Wagoneer Concept’s overall design will carry over to the production model. The Jeep brand expressed in recent press releases not to think of the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer as individual models, but instead the Wagoneer nameplate will become a “portfolio of vehicles” that redefines “American Premium” and delivers a unique customer experience. It is expected that the mainstream Wagoneer and premium Grand Wagoneer will BOTH be offered in short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase offerings.
As for powertrains, we expect that the standard engine will be the award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with a mild-hybrid eTorque system from the Ram 1500. That powertrain delivers 305 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque. We also expect that the legendary 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 with the eTorque mild-hybrid system will be joining the lineup as well. The HEMI offers 395 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque, and like the Pentastar should be offered at the initial launch of the vehicle.
For those expecting diesel power to make its way under the hood of the new Jeep, think again. Instead, Jeep will be offering an electrified plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variant of both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. Jeep has yet to release details about the new PHEV powertrain, that was hinted at with the Grand Wagoneer Concept, but it will more than likely be the same system under the hood of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe.
That powertrain consists of the 2.0-liter turbocharged GME-T4 inline-four-cylinder which is assisted by the addition of a high-voltage battery pack and two electric motors. The electrified powertrain is mated the 8-speed (8HP75PH) automatic transmission that features a transmission-mounted generator unit. The combination is good for 375 horsepower (280 kW), 470 lb.-ft. (637 N•m) of torque and an estimated 50 MPGe in the Wrangler application.
