Last week, we showed you exclusive pictures of a prototype Ram 1500 Big Horn with the box covered in heavy vinyl camouflage. We then broke down how Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) filed two patients in the last couple of years for two different tailgate designs.
Our e-mail exploded soon after posting the article with letters asking things about when will it will be available, as well as other things like asking how do we know that its not just an earlier prototype running around with the box still covered in camouflage. But thanks to our spy photographers, we have pictures of another Ram 1500 prototype (this time, it’s the top of the line Limited trim) wearing heavy camouflage covering its box.
Ram has been very quiet about the new tailgate design. The last time a prototype was caught running around with the split tailgate design was over a year ago in November of 2017.
While Ram has introduced a hidden bumper step through the Mopar parts catalog, it seems from the feedback in the e-mails we have gotten that more people are looking for easier egress to the interior of the box than just a thin deployable step. The all-new 2019 Ram 1500’s box sides have gotten taller compared to the Ram 1500 Classic or DS platform truck that the all-new truck replaces.
Each one of the big-three manufacturers have a gimmick for easier ease to get in and out of the box of their pickups. Ford has built an optional step that is building into the end of the tailgate with a pole to help climbing up, GM has introduced steps in the rear bumper of their trucks and now are introducing plastic steps built into the side of the boxes of their Heavy Duty models. Ram created a rear bumper design with recessed tops of the bumper. Some Ram official say it is for lower height to climb into the box, but we aren’t doubting that it has to do something with the future of this new tailgate design.
